The determination of the sun protection factor according to ISO 24444 is considered the internationally recognized ‘gold standard’. The test is performed in vivo on healthy volunteers. However, it is invasive, complex and costly. The goal of the international consortium is to advance the development of non-invasive methods. Successfully tested methods are supposed to be transferred into ISO standards.

Currently, we are involved in the review of Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (HDRS). Besides this non-invasive in vivo method, the test series includes in vitro and in silico procedures. In total, five alternative methods are being investigated by the Consortium. All methods are tested in comparison to the reference method, ISO 24444. The sun protection factor of a total of 32 selected sunscreen products is measured according to ISO 24444 and with each alternative method by a larger number of test centers. This is the largest interlaboratory test ever undertaken in the field of sunscreen testing.
